MedusaJS

Medusa is the open-source, headless commerce platform that integrates your eCommerce with your ERP and PIM to manage B2B operations from a single source of truth.

Founded in 2021 · 50+ employees. Denmark.

What is Medusa

Medusa is a commerce platform built on Node.js and TypeScript. It decouples business logic from the presentation layer, allowing you to evolve your eCommerce without rebuilding the entire platform every time your processes or sales channels change.

It is the right fit when your business needs more than just an online store. We are talking about clients with custom pricing, technical catalogs, bulk orders, or purchasing processes that require validation before an order is confirmed.

Its architecture is organized into independent modules. Catalog, orders, promotions, inventory, and payments all function separately. You add new features only when you need them, without including components that don't add value to your project.

For B2B projects, Medusa already includes company accounts, users with different permissions, and Request for Quote (RFQ) management. From that foundation, you can adapt the purchasing process to the way your company works.

🧭 Roadmap focused on: Evolution of role-based access control and permissions, expansion of multi-language sales, improvement of flexible payment methods (bank transfer and invoice), redesign of complex catalog management, and evolution of the management dashboard with configurable views.

Commerce focused on businesses with complex catalogss

Medusa is the right fit when eCommerce is part of the commercial process, not just a sales channel.

It is a great option if you work with thousands of SKUs. It is also ideal if each client buys under different commercial terms, or if your ERP defines pricing, stock, and product availability.

It works just as well in three other scenarios: when a single client has multiple buyers, when there are internal approval workflows, and when the sales team creates orders and quotes before closing the sale.

What working with Medusa entails

Choosing Medusa means building a platform that follows your business logic, not that of closed software. Before you begin, define how you manage customers, pricing, orders, and integrations. These will be the foundation of your project.

  • Define your business model: Before development begins, you decide how to manage corporate accounts, rates, approvals, and purchasing processes. The platform adapts to that logic from the start.
  • Connect the systems you already use: Your ERP, PIM, CRM (customer relationship management), or WMS (warehouse management system) are integrated from the early stages to avoid duplicating information or processes.
  • Prioritize features by phase: You don't need to develop everything on day one. Start with your B2B channel and incorporate new markets, processes, or sales channels as your business needs them.
  • Maintain control of your platform: Being open source, you decide how the project evolves, which features to add, and when, without depending on a SaaS provider's roadmap.

Key Medusa capabilities

  • Company accounts with different users: each organization can create buyers with different roles, permissions, and spending limits. This ensures each employee only accesses the functions relevant to them.
  • Customer-specific pricing and catalogs: Each account sees its own rates, discounts, and catalog. Customers purchase using the commercial terms already agreed upon.
  • Request for Quote (RFQ): Customers can convert a shopping cart into a request for quote. The sales team reviews the proposal, negotiates terms, and generates the order directly from the platform.
  • Draft orders: The sales team can prepare orders before receiving customer confirmation. A standard feature for assisted sales.
  • Bulk product upload: Import SKUs via CSV to update large volumes of information without having to edit products one by one.
  • Infrastructure-related costs: Medusa does not charge sales commissions. Project costs depend on the development, hosting, and maintenance you define for your business.

Integrations and technical flexibility

eCommerce doesn't operate as an isolated system. You need to keep product information, pricing, customers, and orders synchronized with the rest of your business applications.

  • ERP: Synchronize customers, pricing, stock, orders, and invoicing so that your eCommerce platform works with the same data as the rest of your company.
  • PIM: Centralize product information and publish technical specifications, images, and documentation without duplicating content.
  • CRM: Share sales information and customer history so that your sales and customer support teams are working from the same data.
  • WMS: Connect warehouse management with your eCommerce to display availability and prepare orders without manual processes.
  • CMS and other services: Integrate Medusa with content management systems, payment gateways, search engines, or marketing tools via APIs.

What they say about Medusa

⭐ What they value most: Companies working with Medusa highlight one thing above all else: they can adapt their eCommerce to their processes without starting from scratch. Its strength lies in B2B. It already includes company accounts, users with different permissions, and request for quote (RFQ) functionality. This reduces the time spent building standard processes for manufacturers, distributors, and wholesalers. They also value that B2B and B2C can coexist on the same platform, and that the business retains control over the project's evolution without depending on a SaaS provider's roadmap.

💡 Things to consider: Medusa is not a platform you can set up in a few days. It requires defining the architecture, integrating business systems, and developing the shopping experience according to the project's needs. That is why it is a better fit for organizations that already work with an ERP, a PIM, or complex business processes. They are looking for a platform that replicates those operations in the digital channel. Like any headless project, it requires a team with experience in development and integrations.
